The range is not a distance problem, it is a descent problem
Toowoomba sits about seven hundred metres up, and the old Warrego Highway climb is the part that makes people reach for the phone. It is steep, with long stretches around one in ten. It is tight. It collects fog and low cloud on the top, and it drops rock onto the road often enough to close. The Toowoomba Bypass takes the through traffic around it now, but it is a toll road and it does not help when the address you want is in Toowoomba itself.
None of that is a problem in a van. It is a real problem on a bike you bought yesterday, in winter, on tyres you have not scrubbed in, with the whole of the Lockyer Valley behind you in the mirrors. That single fact is the most common reason a Toowoomba job gets booked.
The second reason is plain distance. Toowoomba to Brisbane is about an hour and a half each way in good conditions. That is not a bad ride. It is a bad ride twice in a day with a cold start at the far end, which is what buying a bike down the hill actually involves.
West of town the Downs open out. Oakey, Dalby, Pittsworth, Clifton and the properties past them are farm country, and bikes out there move between blocks, into town for work and back again. Two bikes fit in a van and there are two vans, so if more than one is heading the same way it is one trip rather than two.
Long run, so fill the van
Two bikes fit in a van, and there are two vans.
Each van takes two bikes chocked and strapped side by side. On a range run that matters more than it does around town, because the journey is the substantial part of the job: two bikes going the same direction on one trip is a very different proposition to two separate days.
Two bought at the same time
People buying in Brisbane and around the south-east often buy in pairs — his and hers, or a road bike and something for the paddock. Both come up the range on one run.
A property move
Farm and acreage moves out on the Downs are rarely one bike. A road bike, a farm bike and whatever has been under a tarp in the machinery shed since the last owner.
Down to a workshop the town does not have
Some jobs need a specialist who is not in Toowoomba. Two bikes down to the same shop and back up when they are both finished is one trip each way instead of four.
Onward, further west
Dalby, Oakey, Chinchilla and the properties past them. If more than one bike is going the same way, say so — it changes the shape of the job, not just the price.
Why Toowoomba jobs get booked
The Downs generate a different sort of work to Brisbane.
You bought it down the hill
Most of the bike market is in Brisbane and the south-east corner. Buying there and getting it home means either a range climb on an unfamiliar machine or a van, and if it is unregistered the decision has already been made for you.
The range in winter is not the range in summer
Fog sits on the top for hours, the cuttings stay wet long after everything else has dried, and frost on the Downs is real. None of that reaches a bike inside a van.
It is unregistered and the trip is 130 kilometres
Around town, riding an unregistered bike is a short bad idea. On the range it is a long one, in front of a lot of traffic. We take it instead, both directions if it has to come back.
It lives on a property
Farms and blocks out past Westbrook, Cambooya, Pittsworth and Oakey. Dirt roads, grids, gates and a shed a long way in from the road. Worth a sentence when you book it.
It is going further west than us
Dalby, Chinchilla, Miles, Roma. Toowoomba is the gateway and the distances get big quickly. Tell us where it really ends up and we will be straight with you about whether a van is the right answer for that leg.
It came out of a clearing sale
Clearing sales and deceased estates out here regularly include bikes that have sat in a shed for twenty years. They do not run, they barely roll and the tyres are square. All normal, all loadable.

Where Toowoomba bikes go
The range makes these planned jobs rather than drop-everything ones. Give us a date and we will work to it.
Town workshops
Into a Toowoomba mechanic and back out again, or down the range to a specialist and back up when the work is finished.
Dealer deliveries, both directions
Bikes bought down the hill and delivered up here, and Toowoomba stock heading the other way to a buyer in Brisbane.
Farms and rural properties
Grids, gates, dirt and a long way in from the road. We tell you where the van stops before we commit to a time.
Clearing sales and estates
Often several bikes at once, usually none of them running, and frequently with a deadline to be off the property.
Sheds and seasonal storage
Bikes going away for a winter and coming back out when the mornings stop being cold enough to argue about.
Onward to the west
Dalby, Chinchilla, Miles and Roma. Ask and you will get a straight answer on whether the distance makes sense for a van at all.

The Toowoomba runs
Nearly all of them involve the range, in one direction or the other.
Down the range, through the Lockyer Valley and into town. Around ninety minutes when nothing is closed. The most booked run on this page.
The same road with the climb instead of the descent, which is the direction a newly bought bike usually travels.
South down the New England. Cold in winter and a fair distance between anything that could help you if the bike stops.
West into farm country, where the destination is a property and a gate rather than a street number.
Gatton, Grantham, Withcott and Murphys Creek. The bottom of the hill is its own service area and everyone forgets about it except the people who live there.
Common questions
Why not just ride it up the range?
Plenty of people do. The ones who call us are usually on a bike they have owned for a day, or one with no rego, or they are looking at fog on the top and a wet descent. It is a good road when you know the bike and a long one when you do not.
Do you use the toll road or the old range?
Whichever suits the job. The bypass avoids the steep section but it is a toll and it does not go into town, so for most deliveries the old road is still the way in.
How long does the trip take?
Brisbane to Toowoomba is about an hour and a half of driving in good conditions. What actually decides the day is the two ends — a farm gate twenty minutes off the highway adds more than the range does.
Can you collect from a property with no street address?
Yes. Send a dropped pin and a gate name or a lot number. Out on the Downs that is usually more accurate than an address anyway.
Does it need rego or a roadworthy to go in the van?
No. Unregistered, no roadworthy, flat tyres, seized, in bits — all normal work. Tell us which it is when you ask for a price so we bring the right gear.
Can you take more than one bike?
Two per van, two vans. On a range run it is particularly worth asking, because a second bike on the same trip is a very different conversation to a second trip.
Is my bike insured on a trip that long?
Insured with NTI. Up to $150,000 accidental damage cover per load in transit, including loading and unloading. $30 million public liability. The cover is the same on a long run as a short one; distance does not change it.
How much is Brisbane to Toowoomba?
It depends on the two addresses more than the kilometres, plus whether the bike rolls and starts. Send the pickup and drop-off and the make and model and you will get a price for that run before anything is booked.
Do you go further west than Toowoomba?
Yes, on request. Dalby, Oakey and Chinchilla come up regularly. The further out it goes the more it is worth talking through first.
Will you come up for a single bike?
Yes. One bike up or down the range is a normal job. If you happen to know of another going the same way, mention it.
What if it breaks down on the range?
Call. Breakdown recovery is answered 24/7, and the range is one of the worst places in South East Queensland to be stopped. Get yourself off the road and behind the barrier first, then ring.
We cover the rest of South East Queensland too
Get a price for your range run
Send the two addresses and what the bike is. If it is a property rather than a street, a dropped pin is worth more than a postcode.
